Learning Through the Arts ™
An internationally recognized force for educational change
and school transformation

Learning Through the Arts™ is a school transformation initiative, not an
arts initiative, created by The Royal Conservatory of Music, designed to change
the way core curriculum is taught and learned in public schools across the
country.  Currently operating in 7 cities across Canada, LTTA engages student
learning through carefully designed and tested math, science, history, geography
and language units that incorporate performing and visual arts into the learning
process.

LTTA in Toronto
In 1995 The RCM developed LTTA in partnership with Toronto District
School board, involving 5 schools in North York area.  Since then, LTTA
has been implemented in a total of 9 schools in North York and has completed
a five-year pilot project.  Toronto Principals have reported that, "The Learning
Through the Arts™ Program has played a significant role in enhancing student
opportunities".  As of 2000-2001 these schools have agreed to further participate
in the project on an individual basis, realizing the benefits of continuing
development of participatory learning experiences for students.

This national program aims at nothing less than a transformation of the way in
which curriculum is taught and learned in public schools across the country.

  • LTTA teachers gain practical expertise in the use of participatory learning
activities that are consistent with the way most children naturally learn.  They
teach math, science, history, geography, and language curriculum through
carefully designed and tested music, dance, drama, visual arts and language
    arts units of study.

  • LTTA students learn such concepts as mathematical principles and symbols
through the study of music and drama.  They study historical events and
figures through drama, language arts and visual art.  They also experience
and measure the forces of motion through movement.

  • LTTA's database of curriculum implementation ideas has been recognized
by educators across Canada and around the world as a unique resource.
